Double Layers in the Earth's Bow Shock

چکیده
We present Magnetospheric Multiscale observations of electrostatic double layers in quasi-perpendicular Earth's bow shock. These have predominantly parallel electric field with amplitudes up to 100 mV/m, spatial widths 50-700 m, and plasma frame speeds within km/s. The potential drop across a single layer is 2-7% the cross-shock de Hoffmann-Teller occurs over scale ten Debye lengths or one tenth electron inertial length. Some can width 70 30% potential. temperature variation observed roughly consistent their drop. While heating shock due quasi-static frame, these show that also increase Debye-scale structures.

Bow-shock induced star formation in the LMC?
The structure of supergiant shells, in particular of LMC 4, is hard to explain with stochastic self-propagating star formation. A series of supergiant structures lies along the outer edge of the LMC and form a sequence increasing clockwise in age. We have considered the rotation of the LMC and its motion through the halo of the Milky Way and propose that these structures find their origin in st...

متن کاملThe bow shock and jet in L 483
The physical parameters of jets are still poorly understood. Here we present long slit spectra of the molecular hydrogen emission from the jet powered by the young stellar object in L483, from which we obtain details of the jet structure and shock velocities. The jet has a knotty structure, and, in addition, weaker emission is seen between the knots, so that emission is observed along the full ...
متن کاملPulsar bow - shock nebulae II . Hydrodynamical Simulation
We present hydrodynamical simulations, using a 2-D two component model (ambient medium and pulsar wind have different specific heat ratios), of bow shocks in a representative regime for pulsar wind driven bow-shock nebulae. We also investigate the behaviour of a passive toroidal magnetic field wound around the pulsar velocity direction. Moreover we estimate the opacity of the bow-shock to penet...
متن کاملSmashing the Guitar: an Evolving Neutron Star Bow Shock
The Guitar nebula is a spectacular example of an Hα bow shock nebula produced by the interaction of a neutron star with its environment. The radio pulsar B2224+65 is traveling at ∼800–1600 km s (for a distance of 1–2 kpc), placing it on the high-velocity tail of the pulsar velocity distribution. Here we report time evolution in the shape of the Guitar nebula, the first such observations for a b...
